Religious Beliefs

Bob Marley's Rastafarian beliefs played a significant role in his decision to initially refuse amputation. Rastafari is a religious and cultural movement that originated in Jamaica in the 1930s. Rastafarians view the human body as a temple, and they believe that any form of alteration or mutilation is a desecration.

• Holistic Approach to Health: Rastafarians believe in a holistic approach to health and well-being, emphasizing natural remedies and spiritual healing over Western medicine. Amputation, seen as a drastic and unnatural intervention, goes against this belief.
• Respect for Natural Order: Rastafarians revere nature and believe in respecting the natural order of things. They view the human body as a sacred creation, and they believe that altering it in any way is disrespectful to the divine.
• Dreadlocks and Physical Purity: Dreadlocks, a prominent symbol of Rastafari, represent a vow of purity and a connection to the divine. Amputation, by removing a part of the body, would be seen as a violation of this vow.
• Influence of Marcus Garvey: Rastafari was heavily influenced by the teachings of Marcus Garvey, a Jamaican activist who promoted self-reliance and a rejection of European influences. Garvey's emphasis on preserving the black body and resisting white domination may have contributed to Marley's initial resistance to amputation.
