2. Overview of Greek Mythology

Greek mythology is a collection of myths and legends that were a fundamental part of ancient Greek culture. These stories feature a pantheon of gods, goddesses, heroes, and mythical creatures, each representing various aspects of human experience and natural phenomena. The myths served not only to explain the world but also to impart moral lessons and cultural values.

2.1 Major Deities and Their Roles

• Zeus: King of the gods, representing authority and justice.
• Hera: Queen of the gods, symbolizing marriage and fidelity.
• Athena: Goddess of wisdom and war, embodying strategic warfare and intelligence.
• Dionysus: God of wine and festivity, representing ecstasy and the duality of nature.

3. Key Themes in Greek Mythology

Several recurring themes in Greek mythology resonate with the narrative of The Last Supper. These themes include betrayal, sacrifice, and redemption, which are integral to understanding the human condition.

3.1 Betrayal

Betrayal is a central theme in many Greek myths, often leading to tragic outcomes. The story of Judas Iscariot's betrayal of Jesus parallels the betrayal found in tales such as that of Prometheus, who was punished for defying Zeus.

3.2 Sacrifice

Sacrifice is another pivotal theme, represented by figures like Iphigenia, who was sacrificed for the greater good. This theme is echoed in The Last Supper, where Jesus foretells his own sacrifice for humanity.

4. Overview of The Last Supper

Painted in the late 15th century, The Last Supper depicts the final meal of Jesus with his disciples before his crucifixion. Leonardo da Vinci's innovative use of perspective and composition creates a dramatic scene filled with emotion.

4.1 Artistic Techniques

Da Vinci employed techniques such as chiaroscuro and linear perspective to enhance the storytelling aspect of the painting, drawing viewers into the emotional turmoil of the moment.

5. Mythological Characters in The Last Supper

While The Last Supper focuses on biblical figures, the influence of Greek mythology is evident in the characteristics and actions of these figures. For instance, the disciples display traits reminiscent of mythological heroes, such as loyalty, courage, and, in Judas's case, treachery.

5.1 The Role of Judas

Judas Iscariot, often considered the ultimate traitor, mirrors figures like Cassandra from Greek mythology, who was cursed to know the truth but never believed. This connection deepens our understanding of betrayal and its consequences.
