The History of Jelly Beans

The origins of jelly beans can be traced back to the 19th century. While the exact timeline is vague, it is believed that the first jelly beans were inspired by a Turkish delicacy known as "pashmak" or "fairy floss." This candy was made from sugar and nuts, and it laid the groundwork for modern jelly beans.

In the 1860s, jelly beans began to gain popularity in the United States. They were initially sold in apothecaries as a remedy for various ailments. Over time, they transitioned from a medicinal product to a popular treat enjoyed by children and adults alike. By the early 1900s, jelly beans had become a staple in candy shops across America.

Interestingly, jelly beans gained immense popularity during the Easter holiday. In the 1930s, they became a symbol of the Easter celebration, often used to fill baskets alongside chocolate eggs and other confections. Today, jelly beans are enjoyed year-round, but their colorful presence during Easter remains a cherished tradition.

How Jelly Beans Are Made

Jelly beans are made through a fascinating process that involves various ingredients and techniques. The primary components of jelly beans include sugar, corn syrup, and flavoring agents. Here’s a breakdown of the manufacturing process:

1. Mixing Ingredients

The first step in making jelly beans is to mix the ingredients. Sugar, corn syrup, and water are combined to create a syrup, which is then heated to dissolve the sugar completely. Flavoring agents and colors are added to create the desired taste and appearance.

2. Forming the Jelly Bean Centers

The mixture is then poured into molds to form the jelly bean centers. These centers are chewy and provide the primary flavor of the candy. After they are set, they undergo a process called "sugar panning," where they are coated with layers of sugar to create the outer shell.

3. Drying and Polishing

Once the sugar coating is applied, the jelly beans are dried to ensure they maintain their shape. After drying, they are polished with a food-safe wax to give them a shiny appearance.

4. Packaging

Finally, the jelly beans are packaged into bags or boxes, ready to be shipped to stores and enjoyed by candy lovers everywhere.
