How Do You Prepare the Hot Water Tank for Draining?

Preparation is key to a successful draining process. Follow these steps to ensure everything goes smoothly:

1. Turn off the power supply to the water heater. This can usually be done by switching off the circuit breaker for electric heaters or adjusting the thermostat for gas heaters.
2. Close the cold-water supply valve located at the top of the tank. This prevents more water from entering while you drain.
3. Connect the garden hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the tank and place the other end in a bucket or outside where the water can flow freely.

What is the Step-by-Step Process for Draining a Hot Water Tank?

Now that you’ve prepared your materials and tank, follow these steps for draining:

1. Open the drain valve located at the bottom of the tank. Use the adjustable wrench if necessary to loosen it.
2. Allow the water to flow out through the hose. You may notice sediment or discolored water at first, which is normal.
3. Flush the tank by opening the cold-water supply valve for a few minutes. This helps to stir up any remaining sediment.
4. Once the water runs clear, close the drain valve and disconnect the hose.
