Meme culture has evolved significantly since its inception. The term "meme" was coined by British evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book "The Selfish Gene." He used it to describe the way cultural information spreads and evolves, much like genetic material. The concept gained traction online in the early 2000s with the rise of forums and early social media platforms.

The first recognizable memes emerged on platforms like 4chan and Reddit, where users began sharing images with humorous captions. As social media grew, so did the popularity of these memes. By the late 2000s, meme profile pictures became a common sight on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Memes as a Form of Communication

Memes serve as a form of visual communication, often conveying complex emotions and ideas in a succinct manner.
