Early Use of Executive Orders

In the early years of the republic, executive orders were used sparingly. However, as the nation grew and faced new challenges, presidents began to rely more heavily on this tool to effect change quickly.

Expansion in the 20th Century

The 20th century saw a significant increase in the use of executive orders, particularly during times of crisis. Presidents such as Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman utilized executive orders to address pressing issues, including the Great Depression and World War II.

How Executive Orders Work

Executive orders are issued through a formal process that involves drafting, approval, and publication. The process ensures that the orders are legally sound and serve their intended purpose.

Drafting and Approval Process

The drafting of an executive order typically involves consultation with legal advisors and relevant government agencies. Once the order is drafted, it must be signed by the President to take effect.
