Before his presidency, Johnson was the Vice President under Kennedy from 1961 to 1963. His political career was marked by a strong commitment to civil rights and social reform.

Early Career and Rise to Vice Presidency

Johnson's political career began in the 1930s when he worked for Texas Senator Richard B. Russell Jr. He quickly climbed the political ladder, serving in the House of Representatives and later as a U.S. Senator from Texas. His reputation as a skilled legislator and a master of political maneuvering earned him the nickname "LBJ."

In 1960, Johnson was selected as Kennedy's running mate during the presidential election. Their partnership was strategic, as Johnson's Southern roots complemented Kennedy's appeal to Northern voters. This alliance was crucial in forming a united front for the Democratic Party.
