What is Cortado?

Cortado is a Spanish coffee drink that consists of equal parts espresso and steamed milk, resulting in a smooth and balanced flavor. The name "cortado" comes from the Spanish word "cortar," which means "to cut." This refers to how the milk cuts through the intensity of the espresso, creating a harmonious blend.

The typical serving size for a cortado is around 4 to 6 ounces, making it a smaller drink compared to other coffee beverages like lattes or cappuccinos. The milk in a cortado is usually microfoamed, giving it a velvety texture that enhances the overall experience.

History of Cortado

The origin of cortado can be traced back to Spain, where it has become a staple in coffee culture. Its roots are deeply embedded in the Spanish tradition of enjoying coffee with milk. Cortado gained popularity in the Basque region and has since spread to various parts of the world, particularly in specialty coffee shops.

As coffee culture has evolved, cortado has become a favorite among baristas and coffee lovers alike, often featured on menus in cafes that prioritize high-quality espresso and milk preparation.

How to Make Cortado

Making a cortado at home is relatively simple. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you craft the perfect cup:

1. Start by brewing a shot of espresso (about 1 ounce).
2. Steam and froth milk to create a velvety microfoam, aiming for about 1 ounce of milk.
3. Pour the steamed milk over the espresso, ensuring an equal ratio of espresso to milk.
4. Serve in a small glass or cup, and enjoy!

Tips for the Perfect Cortado

• Use freshly ground coffee beans for the best flavor.
• Experiment with different milk types (dairy or non-dairy) to find your preferred taste.
• Pay attention to the milk steaming process to achieve the right texture.

Cortado vs Other Coffee Beverages

Cortado is often confused with other popular coffee drinks, but there are key differences:

Cortado vs. Latte

A latte consists of one part espresso and three parts steamed milk, making it creamier and larger than a cortado.

Cortado vs. Cappuccino

Cappuccino features equal parts espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam, resulting in a frothier drink compared to the smoother cortado.
